Two children died violently on Monday evening in Laval and a 46-year-old man was arrested in connection with this case.
Tuesday morning, the Laval Police Service (SPL) said the death of the children, an 11-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, was observed at the hospital.
The suspect was also taken to hospital, but police learned he was believed to be alive. On Tuesday morning, he was awaiting questioning by SPL investigators before being transported to court where he is expected to appear later in the day.
It is only then that his identity should be revealed. The police did not know in the morning if this man was known to the police.
The nature of the charges to be brought against him has not yet been established. The police have so far been unable to specify the links between the suspect and the two young victims.
The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. in a residence on rue Lauzon, in the Sainte-Dorothée district, west of Laval.
Investigators from the crimes against the person unit and forensic identification technicians began their work.
Monday evening, the mayor of Laval, Stéphane Boyer, mentioned on social media that “all Laval is in mourning” and offered his condolences to the relatives of the “very young victims”. Our teams [de la police de Laval] are mobilized to shed light on this event of untold sadness,” added Mayor Boyer.
A large police deployment was set up near the residence. Tuesday morning, a section of rue Lauzon remained closed to traffic.
