The majority of crime indicators were down last week compared to the previous week in Île-de-France, according to a note published by the Ministerial Statistical Service for Internal Security (SSMSI) of the Ministry of the Interior on Thursday, August 1. The SSMSI focuses on four of the crime and offense indicators committed during the week of July 22 to July 28, the first week including Olympic event days. These “four indicators (…) are down compared to the previous week in the areas hosting Olympic sites in Île-de-France”points out the SSMSI.

Thus, the Ministry of the Interior notes that during this period, there is – 24% of violent thefts (last week compared to the previous one), – 8% of drug use, – 7% of thefts of vehicles and accessories, – 6% of willful damage. The massive presence of law enforcement in Île-de-France, the region with the largest number of Olympic sites, seems to be bearing fruit. The number of burglaries has fallen slightly (- 4%).

But, probably as a statistical consequence of this record number of police officers and gendarmes and the Olympic crowds, violence and insults towards the police are increasing sharply (+15%). Crime is also increasing outside the competition zones in the rest of the country, where the police presence is less strong (+13%) for violent thefts, (+12%) for burglaries.

“Exceptionally, in the context of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games being held in France, the Ministerial Statistical Service for Internal Security (SSMSI) is publishing every week, between July 25 and September 19, 2024, a monitoring of indicators relating to crimes and offenses recorded by the national police and gendarmerie services”explains the Ministry of the Interior in its press release.
