The tremor, at a shallow depth, hit the island of Luzon at 5:05 a.m. Monday (2105 GMT Sunday), according to the United States Seismological Institute (USGS).

“Residents are used to this kind of earthquakes, they didn’t rush outside and panic,” said Lt. Aristotle Calayag, police chief of Lubang town in Western Mindoro, a island off Luzon.

Capt. Michelle Gaziola, the Morong police chief, said the quake was “a bit strong, but it was brief”.

” We are well. Most people are still asleep,” he added.

The Philippines is regularly hit by earthquakes due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from Japan to Southeast Asia to the Pacific basin.
