The Main Deli restaurant closes

(Montreal) Regulars at the Maison du bifthèque Main Deli mourn the loss of the mythical establishment, which suddenly closed earlier this week.

The Saint-Laurent Boulevard restaurant was well known for its rivalry with Schwartz’s charcuterie.

The two shops — located opposite each other — are renowned for their smoked meat sandwiches.

Frederic Serre, a long-time Main Deli customer, said he preferred it to Schwartz’s and said employees knew his usual order by heart: steak with a sausage and liver entrée.

David Lieber, who worked at this restaurant in the late 1980s, has fond memories of its smoked meat, which he says was always better than Schwartz’s.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was saddened by the closure in a Twitter post, adding that Main Deli had the best smoked meat in Montreal.
