At the moment, the restoration of the oldest monument in Paris is taking place. The obelisk that has stood on Place de la Concorde since 1836 is now hidden under a tarpaulin in order to be renovated.

It is the oldest monument in Paris. The Concorde obelisk is 3,300 years old. Since last December, it has been hidden under a tarpaulin in order to be renovated. Tourists are disappointed. “It’s sad that we can’t see it but it’s good to know that it’s been renovated. It will be more beautiful next time”consoles a tourist.

Under the tarpaulin, the wall must be consolidated. Restorations are necessary to prevent bad weather from damaging the stone. “We try to fill all the voids that are under the scales, in the cracks, so that the water no longer penetrates the granite”, explains Bruno Szkotnicki, restorer of works of art. The obelisk had been offered by Egypt. It is a real historical treasure.
