A few hours after the start of the“military operation” from Russia to Ukraine, the first sporting consequences are beginning to emerge. In a terse press release, of about fifteen words (in Ukrainian)the Ukrainian Football Federation formalized the suspension of its Championship, Thursday, February 24, with immediate effect.

“Due to the imposition of martial law in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Championship has been suspended”, can we read in the press release which does not give information as to the sustainability of the competition.

Halfway through the Championship, the Shakhtar Donetsk is the leader, ahead of defending champions Dynamo Kyiv by just two points. A duel between the two Ukrainian behemoths seemed planned to win the title of champion. The two teams are no longer in the race for the European Cup, eliminated from the group stages of the Champions League.
