A pointed hat on a rebellious mop of hair, a shapeless black dress, a broom between the thighs, that’s the image we usually have of witches. On Halloween day, the To have to reminded us however that women of flesh and blood, those, had been called “witches” and persecuted by the authorities of their time. Their crime? Their unconventionality!
In 2022, in Quebec, which women are considered witches? Wouldn’t it be us, the women of a “certain age”, the “little ladies”, as we are frequently called? Maybe we don’t scare people like the supposed witches of yesteryear. Still, it often feels like a public nuisance. Unlike the witches who perished at the stake, however, none of us risk ending our lives on a barbecue. Rather, we are roasted with more or less nasty jokes. As was the case with those sad witch hunts, women are more victims than men. When it comes to aging, why do we make fun of women more than men?
Unless they die young, everyone will one day become another person’s witch or wizard. When will we cast a curse on ageism?
