In Italy, the drought is causing damage to the shores of the largest lake in the country: Lake Garda in Piesquiéra. Its level is at its lowest for 30 years, which triggers the concern of local residents.

The path appeared a few days ago in the middle of the largest lake in Italy. Due to a historic drought, Biagio Island is now accessible by land, attracting dozens of anxious walkers. “I haven’t been here for two years. The last time the water was up to my waist there”wondered a woman. “Arrived on foot on this island, it was unthinkable a few years ago”, continues another. Lake Garda has reached its lowest level for nearly 30 years.

The use of drinking water affected

This week, the measured water level was 60cm lower than last year. Little precipitation and increasingly rare snowfalls during the last winters are enough to test the whole basin of Garda. In one of the dams upstream, the authorities had to adapt the water flow. Italy fears major damage to the harvests to come. A lack of water which is also beginning to affect the use of drinking water.
