Controversy is brewing after the suicide of a 15-year-old teenager earlier this month. The parents had alerted the police station of harassment. What was the reaction of the rectorate?

Has national education been up to the task of dealing with a young victim of harassment? At the beginning of September, Nicolas, 15, was found in his room hanging from his bed. A few months earlier, his parents had reported this harassment to the high school, and deplored insufficient measures on the part of the establishment. In response, the rectorate sent them a letter: “You criticized a teacher for his passivity in the face of supposed harassment suffered by your child”.

Lack of staff

The Minister of Education condemned the letter on Saturday September 16. “We are still not up to par. You have to have the honesty to say it”, specifies Gabriel Attal. Faced with the situation, the associations point out the difficulty parents have in having acts of harassment recognized. “We ask families to send us the evidence. Once again, there is a shortage of staff”explain Catherine Jacquet, vice-president of the “Marion la main tende” association.
