The lemur
3 species of lemurs live in the Auvergne animal park
- The ring-tailed lemur, the best known with its striped tail
- The red vari, a little bigger and red
- The crowned lemur which has a small red crown on its head
The means of communication of the lemur
The lemur is both a diurnal and a nocturnal species. They have 2 means of communication:
Screams: they can emit a dozen different vocalizations. And these vocalizations are different between each species.
The smells: They have a very developed sense of smell and it is by smell that they recognize each other. It is therefore very important not to touch them, otherwise we would change their smell and they might no longer recognize each other.
Malagasy legend
The lemur lives in the forests of Madagascar. It cries out to defend its territory; These cries can sound ominous and impressive. Add to that, an animal that is active at night with glowing eyes…it has been scary and spawned some legends.
The origin of the name of lemurs, then we say ghost lemur or spirit of Roman mythology which would incarnate the soul of the ancestors of the inhabitants of the island.
At one time, they were not very well seen and it scared the inhabitants of the island.
The typical day for lemurs at the animal park
In the morning, they take advantage of a large sunbath. They really like to have very improbable positions in the sun: position of the little Buddha for the maki cattas and lying on the ground like on a deckchair for the red varis. They also spend a lot of time looking for food throughout the day. All punctuated by good naps, all in groups to keep warm.
To see the 4 red varis, 2 crowned lemurs and 18 ring-tailed lemurs, head to the lemur forest in houses 33 and 34.
