A new stage of reconciliation attempts. The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet on Sunday May 14 in Brussels, the European Union announced on Monday. The two Caucasian countries have been fighting each other for thirty years for control of Nagorno-Karabakh.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, will receive the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinian, and the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, for “to promote stability in the South Caucasus and normalization between the two countries”according to a press release.
A meeting with Emmanuel Macron in June
This meeting in Brussels comes at a time when, according to the United States, “tangible progress” were made in the intense discussions held for four days in early May in Washington, and a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh would now be “in sight”.
Leaders of countries in conflict pledged to meet in Brussels “as frequently as necessary in order to manage developments on the ground”. They also agreed to meet the French and German presidents together on the sidelines of the European summit on June 1 in Moldova, according to the EU statement.
