The Georgian Parliament adopted the law on foreign influence on Tuesday, May 14. Many demonstrators gathered in front of the building to protest. Fights broke out inside parliament itself.
In front of the Georgian Parliament, hooded police officers arrested angry demonstrators in Tbilisi (Georgia). Inside the building, it’s the same tension. A fight broke out between deputies. In question ? The bill on foreign influence causing a political crisis in the country. It was finally adopted on Tuesday May 14. The controversial text provides that any organization receiving more than 20% of its funding from abroad will have to register as an agent of foreign influence.
Inspired by a Russian law, this text intends to protect Georgia from foreign interference according to the ruling party. The latter denounces the pro-European mobilizations of recent days. However, for the opposition and thousands of Georgians, this text embodies the authoritarian drift of Parliament. This vision is shared by the European Union. Brussels (Belgium) warned that the adoption of the law would be an obstacle to the accession to the EU of Georgia, a candidate since 2022.
