The latest statistics from the Banque de France tend to show that French households are less and less indebted. Is it really true? David Boéri answers us on the set of 12/13.

Despite soaring prices, fewer and fewer households are over-indebted in France. This is shown by the latest statistics from the Banque de France. Journalist David Boéri takes stock of the France 3 12/13 set: “Inflation has not reversed the trend. With a little over 113,000 files processed in 2022, this is a further decline of 7% over the year. We are talking about bankrupt people, who are financially unable to make facing their debts, and which are supported by the Bank of France. And to explain the reasons for over-indebtedness: “Consumer loans remain stable, real estate loans continue to decline. Only current charges, such as rents, energy or telecommunications bills increased at the end of the year.”

“Credits which punctually cannot be reimbursed”

But in reality, the French have more difficulties. “This is visible in another figure: that of credit repayment incidents to individuals. They are up 18% in 2022, with just over 812,000 incidents… We are not talking about over-indebtedness, but just credits that , punctually, cannot be refunded”concludes David Boéri.
