The Last Repair Shop | Canadian Ben Proudfoot wins the Oscar for best documentary short film

The most recent film from filmmaker Ben Proudfoot, 33 years old and a native of Halifax, The Last Repair Shop, co-directed with Kris Bowers of Los Angeles, won the Oscar in the category of best documentary short, in Los Angeles. The Nova Scotian can thus add a second statuette to his collection, having won an Oscar in 2022 for his short film The Queen of Basketball.



Ryan Gosling and Céline Song are also among the Canadians in the running for an Oscar on Sunday evening at the gala which rewards artisans in the cinema sector in Los Angeles.

Gosling, who plays Ken in the summer hit barbieis in the running for the best supporting actor trophy.

As for the first feature film from screenwriter and director Celine Song, Past Livesis nominated in the prestigious category of best film, but also in that of best original screenplay.

Montreal director Vincent René-Lortie, aged 30, will also experience the Oscars thanks to his film Invincibleselected in the category of best short fiction film.

Toronto-born musician Robbie Robertson, who died last year at the age of 80, is also nominated for his original music for the film Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese.

Another Toronto native, filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, is seeking the Best Feature Documentary award with her film To Kill a Tiger.

The 96e The Oscars ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will begin at 7 p.m. EDT, an hour earlier than usual, and will be broadcast live on ABC and CTV.

Christopher Nolan’s hit film, Oppenheimerwidely favorite with 13 nominations, including best film, best direction and best actor and actress for its stars Cillian Murphy Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt.
