The situation is improving in Greece, where the fire continues to weaken at the gates of Athens, Thursday, August 15. Firefighters remain mobilized in the face of the scattered outbreaks.
A peninsula of ash that looks like a lava flow on turquoise water. This is the striking contrast offered by the landscapes in Greece, ravaged by the worst fire of the year in the country. For several days, the flames engulfed the neighborhoods on the outskirts of Athens and a hundred houses were destroyed. “A big flame came out from behind and burned everything in a minute”says Sakis Morfis, a survivor of the fire.
Fueled by the violence of the Greek Mistral, the fire started very quickly and the firefighters were unable to fight the flames spread over 10,000 hectares. Faced with the blackened landscapes, the survivors are now angry, because they believe that the disaster was avoidable if the areas had been cleared. The Greek government has acknowledged that it must improve its forest fire prevention.
