In 2014, a British couple, Susan and Christopher Edwards, were sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing her parents and burying their remains in the garden of their residence. These crimes, for which they have always claimed their innocence, were committed 15 years earlier. That’s what we learn in the opening seconds of this compelling four-part fictional miniseries that chronicles the possible circumstances under which these very real crimes were committed.
This bizarre TV object stars the dazzling Olivia Colman and equally solid David Thewlis in the lead roles, is written by Ed Sinclair (Mr. Colman in the City) and directed by Will Sharpe (The extraordinary life of Louis Wain). He skilfully deconstructs the codes of thrillers at the ” true crime Literally and aufigured, revealing itself with much formal daring in its true light of disturbing psychological drama. Because beyond the probable circumstances in which these parricides were committed, the interest of this fiction lies in the discovery of the motives which led to these violent deaths and the fragile mental state of those who perpetrated them.
The various narrative threads of the series, never completely unraveled, and the sequences which wonderfully illustrate the “Hollywood” dreamlike nature and the deep psychological distress which plague the protagonists, manage to give some possible answers. Which they do by maintaining a layer of mystery that perfectly befits this incredible, but true story.
