They already see themselves there. The British Labor Party opened its congress in Liverpool (United Kingdom) on Sunday October 8. This is a launching pad to lead its leader Keir Starmer to Downing Street in a year, after 13 years of Conservative power. “Just like you, I’m tired of being in the opposition!”proclaimed Angela Rayner, the party’s number 2, at the opening of the congress, applauded by the activists.
With a lead of between 15 and 20 points over the Conservatives in voting intentions for the legislative elections expected by January 2025, Labor arrived full of confidence in Liverpool. Angela Rayner continued to mock the Conservative government in her speech. At a time when the country is going through a severe cost of living crisis, the party intends to capitalize on the obvious attrition of the Tories, who appear divided and are leaning more and more to the right in what seems an attempt to stand out.
Promises to bail out the NHS
For his part, Keir Starmer announced in the media a 1.5 billion pound plan for the public health service, the NHS, plunged into an unprecedented crisis after a course of austerity. The British are finding it increasingly difficult to access healthcare. The Labor leader also promised to reconsider the Conservative government’s plan to deport migrants who arrived illegally in the United Kingdom to Rwanda. The legality of this project blocked in court will be examined on Monday by the Supreme Court.
