(Newark) Dawson Mercer and Damon Severson scored in the first period on Tuesday, guiding the New Jersey Devils to a 4-2 victory over the Seattle Kraken.
Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves, being beaten by Riley Sheahan and Jared McCann. Yanni Gourde took part in the success of the latter.
Jimmy Vesey and Pavel Zacha, the latter in an empty net, were the Devils’ other scorers.
Joey Daccord blocked 28 shots in a losing cause.
The Kraken’s record slipped to 1-3-1, but the club look to a much-anticipated Seattle opener on Saturday against the Canucks.
Tomas Tatar and Ryan Graves got the assists on Mercer’s goal at 5:02. Graves also helped Severson’s goal at 6:42.
The Devils will host the Washington Capitals on Thursday night.
