Nontron’s reputation in terms of knives is well established. For this 26th edition of the knife festival, there are cutlery artisans from France and even from abroad for some. They present their latest creations to the public.
“The world of cutlery is both heritage and innovative. The way the finishes are made, the materials used, it’s interesting to see what new cutlery has found each year”, explains Sophie Rolin, Director of the Experimental Center for Crafts in Nontron and Périgord-Limousin.
Lots of animations
The 3F3M association will be present for demonstrations during this weekend. Visitors will be able to discover how an ancestral technique works, the low furnace. They are going to activate this low furnace with ores. “The objective is to take out what is called an iron magnifying glass which will then be forged on site”, explains Jean-François Laidin, one of the organizers of this festival. Thanks to their know-how, several blacksmiths specialized in cutlery will intervene to create a unique knife.
As every year, exhibitors will be able to take part in several competitions. In particular, they will be able to distinguish themselves in the “Recycled Ingenious Prize”, by creating a knife with reuse, recycling or diverted materials.
Japan in the spotlight
Japan is one of the countries where the art of cutlery is elevated to the rank of art. This weekend, in Nontron, visitors will also be able to discover Japanese swords. A martial arts master will be there to offer demonstrations and workshops in swordsmanship.
