Visiting the Baumettes prison in Marseille on Wednesday August 3, the Keeper of the Seals announced measures to protect residents, who have complained of noise pollution since the opening of the new remand center for women in 2017.
“We will put in place a screen throughout the establishment”specifies Éric Dupond-Moretti, who also explains that he has set up “a number of disciplinary measures for those who damage the windows”. In addition, the Minister indicates that these windows will be repaired “urgently”. Finally, he adds that the prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône will “reinforce the police presence” around the building.
The collective of inhabitants “The neighbors of Baumettes” complains of shouting, insults and even improvised visiting rooms at night in the middle of the street, France Bleu Provence reported on Monday. The building, inaugurated in 2017, has higher floors than the rest of the prison establishment. A noise reduction system has already been installed on the floors in 2019 but a majority of the frames have been broken, according to the local residents’ collective.
