The jewels of the Grande Bibliothèque in 2021

The Grande Bibliothèque de Montréal unveiled this Tuesday the list of literary, cinematographic, musical and video game works that were the most borrowed by its subscribers in 2021. In many cases, the creators here have been popular with the public and are find advantageously in several of the 13 charts concocted by Libraries and National Archives of Quebec.

Among adults, nine of the 20 most borrowed titles were written by Quebec authors, as evidenced by the presence at the top ofEm, Kim Thúy, and Kukum, by Michel Jean. Obviously, several international authors writers accustomed to the prize list are there again this year, namely Michael Connelly, Joël Dicker, Elena Ferrante, Louise Penny and Ken Follett.

Among the youngest, it’s no surprise that JK Rowling is five times in the charts, especially with his new novel The Ickabog, which sits at the top, far ahead of the others. Two timeless classics have also slipped into the lot, namely Anne, the house of green gables, by Lucy Maud Montgomery and The Hobbit, by JRR Tolkien. As for the popular series Diary of a Wimpy Kid, five of Jeff Kinney’s songs are in the top 20, in French or in its original version Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

As for documentaries, essays and biographies, in addition to the recurring presence at the top of the Route guide and of Drive a passenger vehicle at the top of this list – useful for newcomers who must pass the exams necessary to obtain a Quebec driver’s license – these are the titles The Hourglass – Hostage in the Sahara for 450 days, Édith Blais and Freedom 45, by Pierre-Yves McSween, who come first.

On the children’s side, it’s excellent My first cookbook, by Ricardo, which was the most popular, followed by three guides for construction and adventure video game enthusiasts Minecraft – seven titles dedicated to the popular game are in the top 20 this year.

Speaking of video games, the most lauded titles this year by adults are Final Fantasy VII – Remake, Assassin’s Creed – Valhalla, and Ghost of Tsushima while the youngest opted for more sporty games, either NHL 21, FIFA 21 and Team Sonic Racing.

Finally, in the comic book section, the adult clientele of the Grande Bibliothèque particularly appreciated the series. Paul, by Michel Rebagliati, and Arab of the future, by Riad Sattouf. As for the youngest, the timeless Asterix and Tintin blockade in the lead, the first title outside these two series arriving in 28e place – this is Jane the fox & me, Quebecers Isabelle Arsenault and Fanny Britt.
