Tomer Sisley in "Largo Winch: The Price of Money" by Olivier Masset-Depasse (2024). (2023 PAN DISTRIBUTION / GUILLAUME VAN LAETHEM)

If thirteen years separate Largo Winch II of Largo Winch: The Price of Moneyis that his interpreter Tomer Sisley did not want to be too identified with the hero of novels and then comics, created by Jean Van Hamme. Sean Connery with James Bond had the same concern.

The surprise of this third film is all the better because it comes at just the right time for the summer, as a refuge in dark rooms during these heatwaves, Largo Winch: The Price of Money being in theaters since Wednesday 31 July 2024.

At the head of the seventh largest economic empire on the planet, Largo Winch is the target of an international criminal organization that seeks to wipe him off the map. His latest plan : the kidnapping of his teenage son, Noom, against the backdrop of the murder of his partner, of which he is accused. The false culprit will campaign on all four corners of the world to find his son and prove his innocence. But the ordeal will also bring back to the surface a painful past.

Largo Winch has the fine build of a hero of the 1920s. 1980, born in 1977, first in six novels, then exported as a comic strip in 1990, with the cartoonist Philippe Francq. Ignored in literature, Largo Winch is breaking the bank in comics, all over the world, with 11 million albums sold. The cinema box office follows, with more than three million admissions in 2008, brought back to more than a million in 2011 with the second film. This third volume is worth the trip.

The economic or financial thriller had its golden age with Wall Street Oliver Stone’s 1987 film, leading to a slew of films including the remarkable Margin Call (J. vs. Chandor, 2012) and The wolf of Wall Street (Martin Scorsese, 2013). The plot of Largo Winch naturally lent itself to cinema. Especially since its creator Jean Van Hamme comes from this professional world : dogs don’t make cats. The idea is to make James Bond-style state espionage slide into industrial espionage. A successful bet.

And renewed in Largo Winch: The price money, where, from South America to Bangkok, the millionaire hero pays for his success as a businessman with his own person, with the kidnapping of his son. The film keeps the mystery of the origin of this revenge long enough to keep you in suspense. Better still, it manages to be relaunched after its disclosure. In the nails, this third opus fills all the boxes of a good action film, even avoiding the inevitable sexy romance of circumstance. In terms of money, the price of a cinema ticket is this time profitable.
