Viral videos show an Israeli army vehicle dragging the body of a lifeless man several meters on a rope. The images are real, but take place in Israel and not Gaza as indicated in the initial publication. The Israeli army speaks of “deplorable behavior”, “not in accordance with orders”, which will give rise to disciplinary measures.

Both videos show the same scene. In the first, an Israeli soldier ties the feet of a man, believed to be a Palestinian fighter, with a rope. In the second, an IDF vehicle drags the man’s lifeless body several meters at the end of the rope. In the video, a soldier says: “They asked me to drag the terrorist outside to the road. So there you have it, the Zibar [camion léger] drags the terrorists“.

Even if the original tweet speaks of a man killed in Gaza, the scene actually takes place on Israeli territory, in the vicinity of Zikim Beach. Questioned about the veracity of the events, the Israeli army did not deny it but stated that: “The behavior seen in the images is deplorable and does not comply with army orders. We are aware of the incident and it is being reviewed by commanders. Disciplinary measures will be taken accordingly.”

For the moment, it is impossible to know the exact date of registration, the identity of the person towed by the vehicle, or even the reasons behind this act. Questioned by France 24 Observers, several demining companies claimed that such a practice had already taken place on war grounds to ensure that the body was not mined. Hamas has been suspected in the past of using explosives, notably to booby trap its tunnels.

For its part, this is not the first time that the Israeli army has been accused of reprehensible behavior in the Zikim Beach area. On October 10, Israeli forces released a video appearing to show soldiers shooting four unarmed men who had their hands raised in surrender. The army then refused to make any comment on the scene.
