“We will wear this star until you wake up and condemn the atrocities of Hamas.” The Israeli ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, hung a yellow star on his chest on Monday, October 30, during a meeting of the Security Council, in reference to the star whose wearing was imposed on Jews by the Nazis. He assured that he would carry it “with pride” until the body takes a firm position.
“Some of you have learned nothing in the last 80 years. Some of you have forgotten why this organization [l’ONU] was created”, launched the ambassador, denouncing the silence of the Security Council on the attacks of October 7. Deeply divided, the body did not adopt any resolution on the war between Israel and Hamas. She rejected four draft resolutions, some of which were blocked in particular by the United States, Israel’s ally, because they did not mention Israel’s right to defend itself.
“From this day on, every time you look at me, you will remember what it means to remain silent in the face of evil.”, declared the Israeli ambassador. The yellow star that Gilad Erdan and his team decided to display is stamped with the words “Never again” (“Never again”). Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the October 7 attacks as “worst crime committed against Jews since the Holocaust”.
