Monday, November 20, the International Space Station celebrates its 25th anniversary. Since the year 2000, it has been continuously inhabited; more than 270 astronauts from around twenty countries have already visited it.

At the rate of one trip around the earth every 90 minutes, the International Space Station (ISS) has been orbiting 400 km above our heads for 25 years. She is constantly busy. Crews from more than twenty nations follow one another, and when it comes to shift time, it’s sometimes a little tight. “Eleven people on board is a lot, but it’s good to be here“, testified Thomas Pesquet when he was commander of the ISS. It all started on October 25, 1998, with a Russian module, soon joined by an American module. In total, 40 parts will be assembled for this laboratory at 150 billion euros.

Observation post on earth

Freed from Earth’s gravity, for 25 years we have been studying physics, plant genetics, working on stem cells and life in space. There are of course the lessons of spacewalks in spacesuits to maintain the station. The ISS is also an observation post facing the earth.
