Europeans and Americans fear that Moscow will use chemical weapons to terrorize the Ukrainian population. Why is this threat taken seriously? Here are some answers.
Can the brutality of the Ukrainian conflict go up a notch? It is the fear of the international community which fears the use by Russia of chemical weapons. “If it did this, Russia would pay a high price”warns Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor of the United States. The Russians could release poisonous gas or set fire to a city at the risk of harming civilians and soldiers.
But a specialist does not believe in this hypothesis. “It is implausible because it has little use from a military and tactical point of view in this kind of context, nevertheless, it is a weapon which may have an interest in its ability to terrorize civilian populations”he assures. In addition, Russia signed the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in 1993. The country therefore claims to have destroyed all its stock. But questions persist. For example, did Moscow use a chemical agent to poison Alexei Navalnyan opponent of Vladimir Putin? Moreover, Russia has never acknowledged the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad.
