French songs are excellent ambassadors of culture abroad. They are in the spotlight at an exhibition, right now, at the Château de Villers-Cotterêts, in Aisne.

What if Molière was no longer the only one to make France shine? Today, Édith Piaf, Zaz and Stromae fully embody the country abroad. Joe Dassin and his friends, ambassadors of the French language?

This is precisely the theme of the first exhibition of the Cité internationale de la langue française. “The idea of this exhibition was to say: in what way songs, popular music, contribute to the circulation of the French language throughout the world”explains Bertrand Dicale, the curator of the exhibition “It’s a song that resembles us”.

Unquestionably, this circulation contributes to the desire and attraction of language. A Polish visitor confides, when he started learning French in high school, that he was trained by his teacher in particular on “Charles Aznavour, Céline Dion or Édith Piaf”. “The French language is most beautiful when it is sung”, says another. Visitors are invited to discover the greatest French hits through five rooms, also filled with photos, records, manuscripts and guitars.
