In Roquefort-des-Corbières, in Aude, the mayor had the idea of using goats to prevent forest fires. But according to him, the National Office of Forests has not, for the moment, given him permission.
In the heart of the forest of Roquefort-des-Corbières (Aude)Mayor Luke castan and his assistant Jean-Paul Fournier are worried. The vegetation, which they consider too thick and bushy, will cause a very high fire risk this summer. For them, there is only one solution to prevent this danger: install 350 goats. “With goats, we would be able to keep a slightly less dense plant cover”explains Luke castan. A solution that the mayor considers simple, ecological, and which has already proven itself in other territories such as the Basque Country.
The inhabitants of Roquefort-des-Corbières seem seduced by the idea. But the mayor of the town struggles to keep his enthusiasm becauseaccording to him, the administration would have opposed this project. However, the National Forestry Office ensures that no request for derogation has been submitted to the prefecture: the installation of grazing goats in the forest obeys strict criteria, and an in-depth study of the terrain.
