In Saintes, many residents had to leave their homes following flooding caused by the flooding of the Charente. A few days before the end of year celebrations, they are wondering about the predicted decline.
Soils saturated by muddy water, flooded gardens, and a river swollen by floods, which passes just under the city’s bridges. The Charente has been overflowing for several days, causing flooding in many communities. It reached its peak on Sunday December 17 in the evening, with a level of 6.10 meters. In Saintes (Charente-Maritime), some 150 residents were forced to evacuate their homes. Those who remain are traveling by boat, or are still waiting to be evacuated.
“A ruined Christmas”
The Saintes Christmas market and its ice rink were submerged by water. A few days before the end of year celebrations, residents are preparing to spend a special Christmas. “When we have our feet in the water a few days before Christmas, it’s still not funnyconfides a local resident.
