In the aftermath of the tragedy off Calais (Nord-Pas-de-Calais), Wednesday, November 24, which caused the death of 27 migrants, the city comes together to pay tribute to the victims.

Calais residents gather together with humanitarian associations to pay tribute to the 27 victims of the sinking of a refugee boat off Calais on Wednesday 24 November. A vigil was carried out by a hundred inhabitants. Everyone is moved by the drama, but also angry. “It’s a horror, we have known this now for years, it is not possible”, testifies a woman.

It all happened on Wednesday afternoon. As a fisherman walks around, he notices bodies floating in the water. He rushed in immediately and appealed for help to all the boats in the area, while nearly 15 people had gone overboard. In the end, 27 migrants died, including 7 women and 3 minors. Two migrants survive the tragedy and are brought back to dry land. “I picked up a pregnant woman, unfortunately, then a young one”, says Charles Devos, of the National Society for Rescue at Sea, still marked by the tragedy. An investigation was opened to understand the circumstances of the tragedy.
