Due to the drought but also to the dilapidated state of the running water network, the inhabitants of Mayotte have to face new restrictions. Some use tanks to store water, which has become increasingly precious.
Water taps cut from 4 p.m. until 8 a.m. the next morning, this is what awaits the 135,000 inhabitants of the four most populated cities of Mayotte from Monday July 17. The other agglomerations will face three cuts of 24 hours per week. Residents have already started preparing for it. The vats are multiplying in homes. “I fill the containers. Every two days, we change the water or we use it”says a resident of Kangani.
Hairdressers and hoteliers at an impasse
But for some professions, storage tanks will not suffice. Some hairdressers are unable to honor their appointments. Hoteliers are also at an impasse. These restrictions are due to the drought that is raging in Mayotte, but also to the dilapidated state of the running water network. On the island, a third of the dwellings listed is not connected to the network.
