More than 480,000 French people said “yes” in 2023 and 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) which published its annual survey on marriages and civil partnerships on Tuesday March 12. We learn that 242,000 marriages were celebrated in 2022 and 2023. That’s a lot, it’s even more than before Covid-19.
INSEE explains in fact that this number of marriages in 2022 and 2023 reaches a higher level than before the health crisis, while the trend was downward since the beginning of the 2000s. One of the main explanations concerns the postponement of certain marriages which were canceled in 2020. Same thing for civil solidarity pacts with 210,000 civil partnerships concluded in 2022. However, the deficit in celebrations during the health crisis is not completely compensated, explains INSEE .
Another trend is the age of the bride and groom, which continues to increase quite significantly: 37.3 years on average for women and 39.8 years for men. If we look at the figures from ten years ago, in 2012 it was 34 years for women and 37 years for men.
Finally, regarding marriages of same-sex couples, they represent 3% of marriages and 5% of civil partnerships. A stable figure since 2016.
