A fourth volcanic eruption began in southwest Iceland on the evening of Saturday March 16. The residents of Grindavík were evacuated again.

You could almost hear the heart of the earth beating. In Iceland, once again, the ground cracked under the pressure of the magma. Thousands of liters of molten lava poured out during a spectacular eruption that began on the evening of March 16. A crack of more than three kilometers appeared. Lava fountains were so high that they were almost visible from a tourist site, which was evacuated in the evening.

Fourth volcanic eruption in a few months

The small Icelandic town of Grindavík, located near the lava wall, was also evacuated. In November 2023, the 4,000 inhabitants had already left after an eruption. Only around a hundred of them had resettled, because the peninsula located in the southwest of the country suffered its fourth volcanic eruption in a few months.

In this deserted area, only scientists venture out to collect samples. The Icelandic government has announced that it wants to buy back residences in the area, where nature seems to have reclaimed its rights.
