After the extreme rains of September 7 and 8 that fell in the Aspe Valley (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), the damage is significant. A national road will remain closed for several months.
In Urdas (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), a road has been torn up over nearly 50 metres. The RN134, which links the Aspe Valley to Spain, did not survive the extreme rains of the weekend of 7 and 8 September. It will remain closed for several months. The Gave d’Aspe, which burst its banks during the night from Friday to Saturday, remains very rough. But the river is no longer as wild as it was over the weekend. With the force of the current, a vehicle was moved several kilometres and was stuck in the mud on Monday 9 September.
The inhabitants cannot comprehend the speed of the flood and the power of the waters that have transformed the streets and roads into torrents. Dead wood and rubble pile up near a small hydroelectric power station. Further away, an entire section of the mountain has collapsed. Trucks and excavators are trying to clear an impressive flow of stones.
