The idea of a national unity government is gaining ground on the left before the second round of legislative elections

Before the second round of the legislative elections, several strategies are being put in place to avoid a majority for the RN. A part of the left adheres to the idea of a “plural” majority mentioned by Gabriel Attal, even if the Elysée and the PS assure that there are no negotiations in progress.

And what if, to counter the RN, the left and the presidential camp had no choice but to unite? The idea of a government of national unity is, in any case, beginning to make headway within the now second force in the country, the New Popular Front. A government composed of the left, centrists, and Liot? “OWe no longer have the luxury of depriving ourselves of it,” concedes a pillar of the PS to franceinfo.

Faced with the urgency of the second round of the legislative elections and this express campaign, some even dare to speak about it publicly, like the communist Sébastien Jumel.

“There is an urgent need to form an arc from social Gaullism to the communists, passing through people of good will on the left.”

“We could set ourselves simple objectives, we don’t have to agree on everything, otherwise it would be full powers to the brown plague and the enemies of the Republic,” he pleads.

On franceinfo, Monday July 1, Philippe Brun, outgoing PS deputy for Eure, estimated that “What is at stake now is the preservation of the Republic, the maintenance of our institutions, the maintenance of liberty, equality and fraternity.“. He therefore pleads for “to form a national unity government in the National Assembly in the wake of the National Council of Resistance, ranging from the Gaullists to the left“And to do this, he hopes that politicians will do “put country before parties“, although he is not in favour of a rally in the same way as the former presidential majority. Philippe Brun considers in fact that “the macronian ‘at the same time’“was part of a”“government of one with individual poaching” : “There, it would be a more collective government.“, he maintains.

But Sébastien Jumel, like other socialists on the same line such as the outgoing deputy of Eure Philippe Brun, sets a condition: the respect of several points of the program of the New Popular Front. In any case, to avoid leaving the keys of power to the RN, options exist, insists the ecologist David Cormand: “Either effective participation in a government of these different political groups, or you also have the option of what is called support without participation.”

“Some groups may say ‘we do not want to be in a government with this or that person, but we do not want to block the democratic functioning of the country. If you respect the parliamentary institution, we will give you our support so that you can govern’.”

And to take the head of such a government, names are already circulating like those of Valérie Rabault or Boris Vallaud, two socialist figures of the Assembly. Boris Vallaud and the Élysée indicate to franceinfo that at this stage, no negotiations are underway.
