The Hurricanes Avoid the Trap

The Carolina Hurricanes came from behind to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 on Wednesday night at United Center to remain undefeated this season.

With nine straight wins to start the season, the “Canes” are just one step away from tying the all-time National Hockey League record. This was established by the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1993-1994 and the Buffalo Sabers from 2006-2007.

Halfway through the game, the Blackhawks were leading 3-1. Alex DeBrincat netted a brace, while Patrick Kane was the home team’s other scorer.

With his first goal in the National Hockey League (NHL), Seth Jarvis changed the pace of the game. Fueled by Derek Stepan, who scored first for the visitors, the 19-year-old beat Marc-André Fleury in a breakaway with a nice feint.

Jesper Fast tied the game after just 17 seconds in the third period. Three minutes later, Martin Necas scored the winning goal with a shot that surprised the Quebec goalkeeper between the pads.

Across the ice, Frederik Andersen recorded his eighth win in as many starts. He blocked 27 pucks against the Hawks.

Already 20 points for Draisaitl

In Edmonton, Leon Draisaitl scored twice on top of an assist to help the Oilers beat the Nashville Predators 5-2.

The German, winner of the Art-Ross trophy in 2019-2020, reached the 20-point plateau (nine goals and 11 assists) after only nine games. He is ahead in the column of pointers his teammate Connor McDavid, who concedes him a point.

Draisaitl opened the power-play score on the first frame and then hit the winning net early in the third period with a shot that was as precise as it was sharp.

The Oilers’ offensive talent gave goaltender Connor Ingram a hard time, just making his second start in the NHL. The 24-year-old doorman performed 25 parades, also being foiled by Kailer Yamamoto and Devin Shore. Jesse Puljujarvi completed the score in an empty net.

Mikko Koskinen meanwhile blocked 30 of the Predators’ 32 shots for his sixth win of the season.
