The standoff continues between Paris and London over fishing licenses. France has decided to push back the sanctions against the British, which were to apply from Tuesday. The 250 or so French fishermen who still do not have a license are worried about their future.
In the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais), a fishing boat has been relying on scallops for a week to survive, for lack of a license to be able to fish in British waters. “In our areas on the edge of France, we can only succeed in living by fishing in our seas”, explains a fisherman, “a little worried”. 35 to 45% of turnover is done at the end of the year, and mainly on the English side. “If we can’t go, it will be a big loss of earnings and jeopardize the business”, estimates his boss, Maxime Fait.
Emmanuel Macron said that no sanctions would be applied against the United Kingdom until Thursday, November 4, the last day of negotiations. On the stalls of fishmongers in Boulogne-sur-Mer, there is an emergency. “We have nothing”, deplores Sylvie Dubennoy, poisionner in Pas-de-Calais. The United Kingdom welcomed the postponement of sanctions, and said it was ready for more in-depth discussions to resolve the crisis in the coming days.
