In the United States, the nine letters of the “Hollywood” sign are undergoing restoration for their centenary. While the cinema market is changing, the famous letters are getting a makeover.
These are nine iconic letters. On their own, they symbolize the magic of cinema and the American dream. Perched on the hills of The bone Angeles, the “Hollywood” sign is getting a makeover. In the program : cleaning and painting at 14 m height. A dozen workers take care of the star. To repaint the panel, 1,500 liters of paint will be used. “It’s really exciting to work here. It’s an honor to be the leader of this team.”reports one of the construction workers
The nine white letters, however, were not destined for such glory. Installed in 1923 by a real estate developer, the sign was first an advertisement to sell plots in the future district of Hollywood Land. The letters, which were only supposed to stay for a year and a half, quickly deteriorate. In 1949, the Chamber of Commerce decided to restore them and remove part of the word: “Hollywood Land” then becomes “Hollywood”. In 1978, the wooden letters were replaced by a steel version. The symbol then appears in many films. The letters will celebrate their 100th anniversary next year.
