The holiday season…and roadside checks!

Road checks are particularly numerous at this time of year. Throughout Quebec, SQ police officers intervene to intercept people who drive while impaired.

“Unfortunately, even today, despite there being a lot of awareness campaigns, despite our presence, there are still too many fatal collisions or collisions with serious injuries linked to impaired drivers,” explained to TVA Nouvelles spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec, Nancy Fournier.

If you are stopped at a roadblock, you may be required to take a rapid test with an approved screening device.

“On the side of the road, it really is an approved detection device. This is when the police have suspicions that the person may be impaired by alcohol,” says Ms. Fournier.

If you fail this test, you will then be taken to the Sûreté du Québec station to blow into a breathalyzer. This device will accurately determine the alcohol level in your blood.

Driving while impaired, whether by alcohol or drugs, is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. It is even life imprisonment which is imposed if the motorist causes the death of a person.
