He was killed at his home shortly before midnight. A candidate for marriage in a town in the state of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, was assassinated on Sunday June 2 after the polling stations closed, the local government announced on Monday. Yonis Baños was the candidate of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI, right) for mayor of Santo Domingo Armenta.

The historic election of Claudia Sheinbaum, the first woman elected president of Mexico, was marred by violence. At least 27 candidates in local elections, which were held at the same time as the legislative and presidential elections on Sunday, were killed, according to an AFP count.

The country records an average of more than 30,000 homicides per year, or around 80 per day. Three-quarters are linked to clashes between criminal groups for control of local drug markets. Several cartels compete for the delivery of drugs to the United States (Jalisco Nueva Generacion, Sinaloa, Golfo).

Violence became exponential from December 2006, when former President Felipe Calderon (2006-2012) took office, who launched an offensive against the cartels with the participation of the military. Since then, Mexico has recorded some 450,000 homicides and 100,000 disappearances.

“We will lead Mexico on the path to peace and security”declared the president-elect, who also promised to fight violence against women in a country which has an average of ten femicides per day, according to the UN.
