In the Ghanaian capital Accra, an underprivileged neighborhood is nicknamed “the dustbin of the West”. An artificial dune has been added to the landscape and has been growing steadily for fifteen years. About 20 meters high, it is not made of earth or stone, but 60% of clothes from all over the world. About 100,000 people live in extreme poverty around this mountain of waste.

160 tons of textile waste arrive every day

Most of these clothes come from the recycling stream of rich countries. Every day, the country receives 160 tons of textile waste which makes the fortune of black market retailers with the few good quality pieces. But all the rest of these clothes that no one wants anymore just add to the sad mountain of garbage in Accra, which does not have the means to destroy them.
