The hidden power of trees: catalpa

Originally from North America and Eastern Asia, the catalpa is a large tree that can measure fifteen to twenty meters in height. The genus includes 11 species, intended for ornament or exploited for the quality of its wood. The very fast growth of catalpa is appreciated when you want substantial shade. Its nickname of natural sun visor is quite appropriate in our latitudes. Catalpa is also used in construction. It resists termites, pollution and tolerates frost down to -30°C! The smell of its wood repels mosquitoes, flies, insects in general. No more mosquito nets! If you want to take a nap in your hammock in peace, adopt a catalpa! Nowadays, catalpa relieves asthma attacks and treats whooping cough. The Native Americans who called it “the meat tree”, used it as a poultice, purgative or for skin problems. Young leaves can be eaten in salads, raw or cooked as a vegetable.
