California’s high temperatures are raising fears for the state’s electrical facilities. Loic de la Mornais takes stock of a critical situation.
The heatwave in California puts the electricity grid at risk. In this state, which is a pioneer in the field of electric cars, the inhabitants are instructed not to recharge their vehicles. “It’s a sad paradox”reveals the Loic of the Mornais. It must be said that the heat wave that is hitting the western United States is very severe. By placeas in the Valley of the Deadthe thermometer reads 52°C. In addition to a situation that is difficult to bear, the risk of fires can multiply.
The heat forces Californians to turn air conditioners on high to minimize the effects of these temperatures. However, this creates a real problem since the onuse of air conditioning causes a lack of electricity. Thus, electric car drivers no longer have the right to recharge the batteries of their vehicles between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. However, it will be mandatory to drive electric in 2035. It is therefore paradoxical to ask users not to recharge them.
