In Afghanistan, three million children face acute malnutrition, as Afghan Central Bank funds have been frozen since the Taliban took power in mid-August. Local hospitals are now unable to function.

Afghanistan is inexorably sinking into misery. Since the Taliban’s return to power, and with international sanctions, the country has come to a standstill and on the verge of famine. In the hospital, toddlers are at their wit’s end, and mothers are terrified of losing their children. “My son is sick because there is nothing to eat at home, no milk, no fruit, nothing, we have no more work or money”, explains one of them.

The Taliban are overwhelmed. The country has always lived on an international infusion. The population is stunned. “In the eight days that I have been in the hospital, there have been five or six deaths during the day, and I don’t even know how many have died during the night”, laments a man. “There are very few beds in each hospital in Kabul to take care of malnourished children. In the rest of the country, dozens of clinics and hospitals have had to close due to lack of staff, many caregivers being gone abroad. The health care system is literally collapsing “, reports Dorothée Olliéric, special correspondent in the Afghan capital.
