The Secretary General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) called “emergency” to its 23 member or associate countries “proactively reject” any agreement targeting fossil fuels in the climate negotiations at COP28 in Dubai, in a letter consulted on Friday December 8 by AFP.
In this letter dated Wednesday, and authenticated by a recipient member country, Secretary General Haitham al-Ghais “press” its members and their delegations at COP28 of “proactively reject any text or language that targets energy, i.e. fossil fuels, rather than emissions” of greenhouse gases. “Although member countries” and their associates “take climate change seriously (…), it would be unacceptable for politically motivated campaigns to endanger the prosperity and future of our people”continues the letter.
The letter is addressed to the 13 members of OPEC, including Iraq, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, which chairs this year’s United Nations climate conference, and Saudi Arabia, at the forefront of opposition away from fossil fuels. The mail is also sent to ten associated countries, such as Mexico, Azerbaijan, Russia and Malaysia, all present in Dubai.
