Habitat is an iconic brand that could disappear. The brand was placed in receivership on Wednesday, December 6. Bad news for regulars of the 25 stores in France, like Xavier, who has always been loyal to the brand. “I think it’s good quality furniture. (…) It’s modern, it’s a bit timeless, it doesn’t go out of style easily”he believes.

A new philosophy

Forty years ago, the British brand brought a new philosophy to French interior decoration: contemporary furniture that is above all minimalist, and simple materials like wood and metal. After years of overload, hyper simplicity is valued. The brand’s best asset: designer Philippe Starck, the first to talk about “low design”, the minimalist style. Bought successively by several French groups, the brand says it has suffered from management errors and more recently from inflation. The fate of Habitat and its 450 employees will be decided in January.
