Plants that are resistant to lack of water are becoming increasingly popular and are increasingly in demand in garden centres. Report in the Var and the Bouches-du-Rhône, where restrictions on the use of water could be put in place.

In a housing estate in Pourrières (Var), Nicole Lemay’s garden is out of the ordinary. It only has plants that are heat resistant and require little water. She designed her dry garden 11 years ago, very adapted to the Mediterranean climate, and without lawn. “A green lawn in summer means a lot of water“, she recalls. Last summer, despite the drought, she was able to enjoy colorful flowers in her garden, at the cost of just one watering per week, drop by drop.

Energy savings

An individual can quickly consume 100 or 200 euros of water with daily watering, and can go down two to three times this amount by putting a controlled watering“, explains Kevin Razon, landscaper. In garden centers, more and more customers are turning to plants that require less water. To support awareness, Nicolas Roubaud, landscaper in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), offers more drought-resistant plants, including cacti, but also lavender, rosemary and sage.
