“There is Ben Attal, he is the son of…” declared Charlotte Lipinska before also being interrupted by Marie Portolano, proud to know the answer: “From Yvan Attal and Charlotte Gainsbourg!” But Thomas Sotto seemed completely beside the point: “Oh yes? I had Gabriel Attal in mind” he whispered, causing laughter from the former Canal+ sports journalist who couldn’t help but repeat his sentence out loud. “Thomas Sotto said to me: Is he the son of Gabriel Attal?” laughed Marie Portolano, before the 50-year-old journalist apologized: “Yes, I made a slip of the tongue… Excuse me”.
The Attals are numerous, but they are not related
Thomas Sotto’s slip of the tongue can be understood, given this surname that many French personalities share without having any family ties. Gabriel Attal is actually the filmmaker’s son Yves Attal, died in 2016 following a devastating cancer, and has absolutely no relationship with Yvan Attal, who is a native of Tel-Aviv (Israel), and is the only son of a watchmaker father and an Algerian housewife mother, both Jewish Sephardic. We can also cite Alain Attal, filmmaker who produced all of Guillaume Canet’s films, such as The little handkerchiefs, Rock’n’Roll, My idol, We will end up together, Him or Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom. Gabriel Atta, Yvan Attal and Ben Attal also have no family ties with ex-police officer and far-right activist Bruno Attal
