the government’s unprecedented campaign to mobilize young people

The government, Meta and Voted – created in 2021 and which advocates for a more open and inclusive democracy – have joined forces to design a campaign that wants, by several means, to convince young people to go to the polls on June 12 and 19 .

There is the playful, the didactic, and the informative. The fun is, for example, “Let’s vote”, “Voted” and “Legislative 2022” stickers to share on Instagram to encourage your community to mobilize around the ballot. The didactic is a series of ad hoc content developed to explain the issues of this election. “Because one of the obstacles to votingexplains the GIS (Government Information Service), it’s not understanding what it’s for.”

So this GIS, an administration attached to Matignon, has developed educational sheets with the members of the NGO Voted, starting from the questions that are most frequently asked, in particular on search engines, such as “What is a deputy for?” , “What is the National Assembly for?”

These sheets will be shared this Thursday on Facebook and Instagram, with wide distribution guaranteed by Meta, in a sort of socially responsible approach by the company, which explains that it is “in [son] DNA of giving a voice to all”. Facebook alone represents 40 million users in France. As for the information, it is all the practical content on the date of the vote, the location of the polling stations and the procedures for establishing proxies.

On Thursday, June 2, a banner will appear at the very top of Facebook’s news feed, which will link to the government portal which brings together all the information: elections.interieur.gouv.fr.

On Election Day June 12 and 19, those same users will receive notifications reminding them to vote. This is called “going towards”, “to reach young people where they are”explains the GIS, even if the campaign targets everyone over 18, including seniors.

Still in this approach of reaching out to the public, Instagram and the NGO Voted are deploying until June 6 at the We Love Green Festival in the Paris region, to go directly to meet young voters. According to Ipsos, 41% of 18-24 year olds abstained in the second round of the presidential election.
