Unemployment insurance reform: government options criticized by oppositions
(France 2)
While unemployment insurance reform is now clearly on the table, the government is reportedly considering several measures, including a reduction in the duration of compensation. Avenues denounced by the left, when the National Rally emphasizes the positions to be filled.
Unemployment insurance reform is now clearly on the table. The government would consider reducing the duration of compensation, which has already gone from 24 to 18 months in 2022. Another option: act on the duration of eligibility, i.e. the time you must have worked to be able to be compensated. Another possible announcement is a strengthening of controls. In 2023, 600,000 verifications were carried out.
Drop below 5% unemployment
The government’s actions have already been denounced by the left. “Those who are called upon to pay, as always with this government, are the most modest, the middle class. They are those who, precisely, already have such difficulty making ends meet”, castigated Olivier Faure, first secretary of the Socialist Party. For the National Rally (RN), the problem is not there. “Today, you have 300 to 400,000 free jobs that must be filled”, indicated Jean-Philippe Tanguy, RN deputy for the Somme. The government’s objective is to drop unemployment below 5% by the end of the five-year term, compared to 7.4% currently.
